What is the Serpentine weather radar?
The Serpentine radar is a dedicated Bureau of Meteorology installation located near Serpentine Dam, roughly 50 kilometres south-east of Perth. It provides a 512-kilometre range, covering the Perth metropolitan area, the Darling Scarp, and the South West land division. The 128 km and 256 km loops are most useful for tracking localised showers and storms. You’ll often see the perth radar 256 live view for a balance of detail and coverage, or the wider perth radar 520km sweep for broader weather systems moving off the Indian Ocean.
How should I use the Serpentine radar?
Use the 128 km loop to see detailed rainfall near Serpentine, Mandurah, and Perth’s southern foothills. Switch to the 256 km view for a wider look at approaching troughs. Can I see the 128 km Serpentine radar loop for Perth?
Yes. The 128 km loop is the default view on the live radar above. It offers the clearest picture of showers and storms within about 80 km of the radar site, covering Serpentine, Mandurah, and southern Perth.
How does the Serpentine radar compare to other Perth radars?
Serpentine covers the southern half of Perth. For the northern suburbs, use the Buckland radar (near Gingin). For the eastern hills, the Jarrahdale radar fills gaps. Together they provide full coverage of the metro area.
Does the Serpentine radar detect bushfires?
It can detect dense smoke plumes from large fires, but its primary purpose is rainfall and storm detection. For fire weather alerts, rely on the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
